His portrayal of Koteks seems to be an indictment on the sad state of the profession of engineering in the corporate age, when patents are in the hands of corporations instead of pioneering inventors like Edison.

This is a bit much, agree? It's hard read Pynchon's judgment into the work, but evenso Edison wasn't exactly the most honest business-man.
